AI Didn’t Replace Our Developers. It Made Them Faster.
There has been a lot of discussion lately about whether AI will replace software developers. After recently completing a custom WordPress 7 project at TWN, I think we’re finally at a point where we can answer that question with real-world experience instead of speculation.
For this project, we decided to integrate AI into almost every stage of the implementation. Using ChatGPT 5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8 alongside Figma, we challenged ourselves to see how far AI could take us in building a production-ready website.
The starting point was the Figma design. Instead of manually inspecting every screen and documenting every section, AI helped us understand the design system, identify reusable components, extract content fields, suggest the Advanced Custom Fields structure, and generate the first version of the WordPress theme. It also accelerated the creation of templates, styles, JavaScript interactions, and the overall Gutenberg-ready architecture.
The speed difference compared to a traditional workflow was impossible to ignore. Work that would normally consume many hours was completed in a fraction of the time, allowing the team to focus on solving problems instead of repeating mechanical tasks.
But this is where reality becomes more interesting than the headlines.
The website was not generated with a single prompt, nor was it ready to go live after AI produced the first version. Every important component went through multiple iterations. We refined prompts, regenerated sections, adjusted layouts, corrected logic, optimized performance, and manually rewrote parts of the generated code whenever it didn’t meet our quality standards or our architecture.
Building a professional WordPress website is far more than generating HTML, CSS, or PHP. The project still required experienced developers to make technical decisions, implement custom functionality, review every generated output, handle the build process, prepare deployment, configure production environments, and ensure everything worked reliably before launch.
In other words, AI dramatically accelerated development, but people delivered the product.
That’s probably the biggest lesson we took away from this project.
AI is exceptional at removing repetitive work, generating strong starting points, and helping developers move faster. What it still doesn’t replace is experience, engineering judgment, understanding business requirements, or knowing when generated code simply isn’t good enough for production.
The result was exactly what we were aiming for: a high-quality custom WordPress 7 implementation delivered faster than our traditional workflow, with a client who was genuinely happy with both the process and the final product.
For us at TWN, this wasn’t an experiment to see whether AI could replace developers. It was proof that the best results come when experienced engineers know how to work with AI instead of competing against it.
The future of software development isn’t AI or humans.
It’s AI empowering humans to build better software.
